Lesson Title: Touchdown Tag

Subject Areas/ Skills Covered: Football, offense, defense, tagging, fleeing

Objectives: Students will be able to explain the difference between offense and defense.  Students will use chasing and fleeing skills safely during the activity.  Students will demonstrate teamwork and sportsmanship during the game.

Equipment: Open space (playing field), cones (to mark fields), 5 small balls

Lesson: The teacher will split the class into two separate teams.  One team will be the “offense,” the other will be the “defense”.  The teacher will also choose a team leader for each team.  To distinguish teams, the teacher can hand out different color flags that will be placed in the waistband of the two different teams.

The two teams will go to opposite sides of the playing field.  Once there, the “offense” will form a huddle and the leader of the team will take one of the balls and distribute them to different players.  The leader should be careful to hide who is receiving the balls from the other team.  When ready, the offense will try to make it to the other side of the playing area without being tagged.  If a player is tagged, they must show the other team their hands.  If they had one of the balls, they must hand it over (they were tackled).  If not, they have faked out the other team and may continue faking so others can score.  If a student with the ball reaches the other end of the field, they score a “touchdown” and receive a point for their team.  When all players have scored a touchdown or been tackled, then the teams will switch roles and continue.

As the game progresses, a new leader will be picked by the old leader, and new students should be picked to carry the ball.

GENERAL RULES:

  1. Players must stay inside the playing field.
  2. Ball carriers may not hide the ball or hand it off during the game to avoid being tackled.
  3. All tagging is done with one hand.  No one is allowed to pull clothing or push.
  4. Defensive team must stay on their end line until the offense breaks from the huddle.
