Lesson Title: 4-Down Touchdown (lead-up activity) Subject Areas/ Skills Covered:
Objectives: Students will review and demonstrate previously learned football skills including: hiking, passing, and receiving.  Students will also learn that there are four downs in the game of football.  Each group will demonstrate teamwork as they attempt to score points. Equipment: Cones to mark the end zone, 10 footballs, 10 small cones, 10 polyspots

Lesson:
Object is to move a football down the field to score a touchdown in 4 or fewer plays.  Each time a ball is caught, the group will move up to the new spot and continue trying to score.

Teams are made up of 3 or 4 players.  First person in line is the center (they hike the ball), second person in line is the quarterback (they throw the ball).  When the quarterback says, “hike”, the center will hike the ball and go out for a pass.  When the receiver gets far enough away, the quarterback will say, “stop” and try and complete the pass.  If the pass is caught, the team moves their marker up.  If the ball is not caught, they will remain in the same spot and try again.  After each turn, the quarterback from the turn before will become the center and a new player will become the quarterback.  Order goes like this; first person is the center, the second person is the quarterback and all others wait.

If the players reach the end zone (passed the cones), in 4 or fewer plays, a touchdown is scored and the team will receive a point.  If the team does not score in 4 plays or less, then they must continue until the touchdown is achieved before trying again.  For younger classes (1st & 2nd grade), this rule can be ignored.
